Being a mom is indeed a wonderful phase of your life and you deserve to enjoy it to the fullest extent. However, it is often very difficult to maintain a proper balance between family time and work, when you become a mom and your baby is your prime focus. The best thing is to go for the work from home option which helps you to pursue a career and also spend quality time with your baby and family. Here are some tips to increase your effectiveness as you work from home.
Get your baby adjusted to a schedule
You might find a bit strange when I say this. How can such a small baby be trained to get adjusted to a schedule? However, mark by words; if you are working from home, creating a schedule indeed has a lot of value. To tell you frankly, even I did not have a very strict schedule when I was a new mom, but my baby got used to a regular routine since the age of four months. In fact, you do not need to push your baby into a routine; with a little effort, it will come naturally. Knowing when your baby is going to eat, play or sleep would easily enable you to return to work accordingly.
Build rituals for yourself
Let me explain. After your baby goes to sleep or after you drop your kid to school, you might need some inspiration to get yourself into the mood to work. This inspiration is what I call a ritual. I would not suggest you what the ritual should be. You should choose it according to what you prefer. It may be anything from watching television for half an hour or drinking coffee, to turning on your favorite music for some time and listening to it before you get back to work.
Keep a to-do list handy
I always maintain a to-do list for the entire week, even now when my kid is quite grown up. As when I remember, I keep adding to the list and allow it to get long. The work –related items are kept separate from the personal items. Every day I select around three to four items from the list on priority basis, that is, I select the items that I really need to complete. Try this out, and you will really be amazed at your efficiency when the focus is narrowed down each day.
Opt for timers
This will help you maximize your nap time hours. When you become a mother, getting nap is something as precious as gold, so you must be very protective about those nap hours. Set timers for different jobs that you do. For instance, when I used to work from home, social media involved a maximal portion of my job. Therefore I used to allocate time for different activities- like 25 minutes for responding to social media posts, 40 minutes for composing, checking and responding to emails, and an hour for activities such as writing, video editing, and the like. I strongly recommend setting the time like this. It helped me to remain focused, and will also help you.
Make the most of driving time
If you have any calls to make or receive, try to schedule them as much as possible when you would be driving. I used to take calls from my clients whenever I was driving to or from the market. It is far better to accept calls in this manner rather than wasting your nap time in answering to calls.
Arrange meeting while on the walk
In my case, my work does not involve meeting anybody in person. But in some professions you might need to meet clients, your employers or your subordinates once in a week or fortnight. If you are in such a profession, I would suggest that you go for a walk during the meeting. For instance, if you are meeting a client over a cup of tea, walk and talk while sipping on the tea. If you are comfortable enough, you can even carry your baby in a pram. On one hand you do not need a babysitter, and on the other hand, walking will keep you in good health and relaxed.
Get up from bed early
When you are a work from home mom, going for early work hours is a great option. If you are not comfortable with the idea of waking up early every morning you may create your own schedule, such as waking up early, say three days in a week. Practice it and gradually you will find yourself enjoying waking up early and being ahead of the game. You will experience a reduction in your stress level as your productivity increases, and you can also spend some personal time with your husband after dinner.
Be choosy while responding to emails
There are many who simply love receiving emails and responding to them. Even I was one among them, till I became a mother. If you continue reading and responding to 100% of the emails that strike your inbox, you might find yourself spending the whole day responding to emails. So, respond only to those emails which are really serious and requires a response. For others you can simply set an automated email response.
Get yourself prepared on Sundays
Sunday is a time for endless relaxation but perhaps no longer when you become a mom. Maybe there is no official work on Sundays, but you can always prepare yourself for the coming week with some meal planning, grocery shopping and food arrangements.
