When it comes to cough and cold in babies, it is not at all good to rush for over the counter (OTC) drugs. It has been seen that on one hand, OTC medicines have detrimental side effects, and on the other hand, they would not act sooner. Here I would suggest some natural remedies for cough and cold which you can use if your baby shows symptoms.
For any kind of sickness in babies, breast milk is probably one of the most effective remedies. It can work wonders by strengthening the immune system of the baby, passing some of the mother’s resistance power to the baby. Whenever your baby has cough, adjust the feeding schedule so that your baby feeds more number of times.
Also, a cough can be soothed with the help of a natural oil rub. Take around 3 drops of eucalyptus, peppermint and rosemary oil and mix it to about 4 teaspoons of olive oil. At the baby’s back and chest, rub the mixture. This remedy is great in the night time, since the eucalyptus gives relief from coughing while the rosemary allows the baby to sleep.
A simple method to remove congestion is by applying steam. Just take your baby to the bathroom, stand and allow a hot shower to run so that the air becomes steamy. For some time, stay in that air along with your baby, and this will clear the airway of your baby to a great extent.
An alternative remedy is to give a warm bath to the baby, adding a small quantity of essential oil to the water. As a natural remedy that cleans the airway, you can use eucalyptus, and also go for thyme or sage drops. Again, you can also subject the baby’s room to humidification in order to keep the air moistened. This helps to give relief from congestion and coughing.
A bulb syringe and certain saline drops are what you should go for if you find that your baby’s nose is clogged with mucous or runny. Introduce a few saline drops in one nostril with the help of a dropper, and then, in order to suck out the mucous, utilize the rubber bulb syringe. With the other nostril, repeat the same thing. Let me tell you from beforehand that this process might be a bit rough for the baby, but please do not leave it midway. Complete the process and you will find that the runny nose is relieved quickly.
If your baby has fever, it might be one of the bitterest moments in your life. But you should know that when there is fever, the body is actually combating infection naturally. However, if the temperature of your baby becomes very high, you should definitely do something to provide relief. In such cases, I would recommend that you contact a doctor regarding the use of ibuprofen or any other such remedy. For a baby, the best thing is to take an appointment with the doctor, since there are many babies who have a tendency to get high fever at night, when it might not be possible to contact a doctor.
